Spille Wind Farm
Anchor-Menu
The 75 MW Spille wind farm represents a milestone in Albania’s clean energy transition. Developed by VERBUND, Austria’s leading renewable energy company, the project will be the country’s first commercial wind farm.
Located near the coastal village of Spille, the site benefits from strong wind resources while being close to Albania’s transmission network. When completed, the project will deliver enough clean electricity to power tens of thousands of households every year, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to Albania’s climate goals.

The Spille wind project is designed to become a flagship renewable energy plant in Albania. The Spille wind farm will produce approximately 130,000 MWh of clean electrical power annually.
The plant will include 12 turbines of type 6X MW, resulting to a combined capacity of 75 MW. The project includes the construction of a new 30 kV/110 KV substation and a 5.7 Km double-circuit overhead line, ensuring a secure and stable connection to Albania’s national grid. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. Once complete, Spille will not only diversify Albania’s renewable mix—traditionally dominated by hydropower—but also help secure the country’s energy independence.
Project Area
The site is located on hilly terrain near the Spille municipality, approximately 6.5 Km from the Adriatic coast. Its proximity to Albania’s transmission network reduces infrastructure needs while enabling efficient integration of renewable energy.
How Does a Wind Turbine Work?
A wind turbine uses the power of the wind to generate clean electricity. The principle is simple: when the wind blows, it sets the turbine’s rotor blades in motion. These blades are specially shaped to capture the wind’s energy and start turning even at relatively low wind speeds.
The rotation is transferred via a shaft into the nacelle, the housing at the top of the tower. Inside, a generator converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. From there, the electricity is injected via cables into the regional grid, ready to supply households, businesses, and public facilities.
The great advantage: wind power produces no emissions or harmful by-products. Wind turbines are reliable, highly efficient, and make an important contribution to protecting the climate. Each turbine saves many tons of CO2 every year and helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
This is how a wind turbine transforms the natural power of the wind into sustainable energy – local, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
To validate the wind conditions at the site, a measurement campaign was carried out for a year and a half.

Energy for Albania
A special project company – VERBUND Green Power Albania Wind Shpk. – was formed for the plant’s construction, operation, and maintenance.
The power plant will contribute to improving the security of electricity supply in Albania and help to reduce the country’s dependence on electricity imports. It has been planned in an environmentally compatible way, in accordance with best in class criteria for environmental respect and quality excellence and produces no emissions.
Corporate Social Responsibility
VERBUND will construct one of the first large-scale wind farms in the country, setting high standards in socially responsible engagements. The company stands for fairness and reliability towards all stakeholder groups.
Environmental Policy
VERBUND commits itself to providing a quality service in a manner that ensures a safe and healthy workplace for our employees and minimizes our potential impact on the environment.
The company also acknowledges and accepts the important responsibility to conduct business in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and will strive to use the best environmental practices in all our activities.
For this reason, an in-depth analysis of the environmental surroundings was performed, and the project was approved by the environmental authority.
