About VERBUND

The VERBUND Group is Austria's leading energy company and one of Europe's largest producers of renewable energies. 98% of the energy generated by the Group comes from renewable and environmentally friendly sources.

Traditionally, VERBUND has consistently produced significantly more hydropower than any other energy source, positioning itself as a leader in hydropower in Europe that now operates over 8.4 GW of hydro installations across the continent.

In 2012, VERBUND inaugurated the Ashta Hydropower Plant in the north of Albania, close to Shkoder, the country’s fourth largest town. The pioneer installation was a first for Albania and produces over 240,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. This is currently the installation plant that the Austrian multinational group has under operation in the country.

In recent years, VERBUND initiated an energy diversification and internationalization strategy, with the objective of increasing the amount of combined wind and solar capacity in the company’s overall generation to 25% by 2030.

Albania is a pivotal country in VERBUND’s upcoming international growth plans. The country boasts significant wind potential along with ample solar radiation, making it an ideal location for sustainable energy projects.

Mission V: Our Path to a Sustainable Future

At VERBUND, we recognize that the European energy transition demands urgent and substantial investments in green energy—specifically in wind, solar photovoltaics, and green hydrogen. In line with our commitment to decarbonization and sustainability, we developed "Mission V," a strategic initiative designed to support Europe’s energy transition through three key pillars:

Strengthening the integrated national energy market in Austria and Germany,
Establishing VERBUND as a market leader in green hydrogen across Europe, and
accelerating the large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources, including hydro, wind, and solar PV throughout the continent.

Together, these pillars will guide our efforts in building a sustainable and resilient energy future for generations to come.
